Department of English
The Department of English was founded in 1981 with the primary goal of addressing the first language needs of Pre-University (PU) students. This establishment marked a significant step towards enhancing English education at the foundational level, particularly for students transitioning from high school to higher education.
In 2001, the department expanded its academic offerings by introducing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program in Functional English. This program was initiated under the leadership of Deepthi.K and was designed to provide students with practical English language skills that could be applied in various professional contexts. The curriculum focused on developing proficiency in English communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills, thus preparing students for diverse career opportunities.
Building on its undergraduate success, the department launched a Master of Arts (M.A.) program in English Language and Literature in 2006. This self-financed program is headed by Ms. Praleena Premkumar and aims to deepen students’ understanding of English literature, linguistics, and advanced language studies. The M.A. program has been instrumental in fostering advanced academic research and professional expertise among students.
Over the years, the Department of English has achieved commendable success, consistently securing university ranks and maintaining a high standard of academic performance. The department’s emphasis on both theoretical and practical learning has contributed to its reputation for excellence. Field visits and study tours are integral components of the curriculum, providing students with experiential and contextual learning opportunities. These activities enhance students’ understanding of real-world applications of their academic knowledge and promote a holistic educational experience.
In addition to its regular programs, the department offers an add-on course titled “English for Competitive Examinations.” This course is specifically designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in various competitive exams, thereby broadening their career prospects and academic opportunities.
The department’s commitment to quality education and its continuous efforts to innovate and adapt to the evolving educational landscape have been key to its success. The combination of a strong academic foundation, practical learning experiences, and a focus on competitive readiness ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of their future careers.
In summary, the Department of English, established in 1981, has significantly contributed to the academic and professional development of its students through its B.A. and M.A. programs, leadership in academic excellence, and innovative course offerings. The department’s ongoing dedication to enhancing educational outcomes through experiential learning and specialized courses continues to foster a vibrant and dynamic learning environment.
